You’re absolutely right. In the article, I meant the movement at a bit lower heights, seeing as the Columbia made the “roll” and maneuver that transforms it from high-drag position to more of an airplane-like position.

But I completely accept, you’re right, this depends on what height – the first stage is the increase the drag and to get the shuttle to slow down.

err, not quite.
During most of its descent it comes in belly first, to give it the most drag so it can slow down.
It is designed to avoid turbulence.
Only when it is in the lower atmosphere does it start flying like a normal airplane.

You’re absolutely right, and to be honest, I noticed this after posting. I meant that the ending was disastrous; the mission itself wasn’t. It might be better phrased as “.. it’s a surviving piece of history in light of a horrible, disastrous *END* of this space mission”.

Actually, I think that even out of the pieces that survived (some hard drives, the [live] worms, etc) it was possible to extract very useful information about the experiments that were conducted while in orbit.. I will have to look it up, though, it might make for a great post, examining the benefits of the experiments that were done in orbit with the STS-107.

I’ll think of a better way of phrasing it and will change it in the post – I didn’t really mean to say the entire mission was a disaster. Thanks for pointing this out to me
