Hi Mooeypoo
First, about your teaching abilities are really nice, your explanations are clever.
Second, a question: what is the best way to calculate the mathematical equations of the actual orbit of the sun´s system “around” the Milky Way galaxy´s center?
Finally, I understand you are not providing a personal email, but I you will find people with many opinions about your project and about your persona. I just wanna know what is your academic background, your actual job and whether you have kids already.
All the best, Carlos
It’s true that I don’t supply my personal email, but if you fill out the form above, I do get it. If you want a direct email address, moo [at] smarterthanthat [dot] com works too (the contact form above is sent to that address).
I should probably write that in the about page, I just didn’t think it was that relevant, but here goes: I’m 27, a physics student (almost done with Physics B.Sc) and I don’t have kids yet. hope that answers your question
I do believe in science education and this blog is my attempt to contribute to the noble effort in that area.
About the way to calculate the orbit of the sun through the milky way — that’s a great question, I don’t know the answer off-hand. I’ll have to do some digging on that one.
This page, though, might help a little to start this quest: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galactic_coordinate_system
I’ll check it out.. good question Thanks for your interest!
Hi Mooeypoo
OK, the website you suggested is nice. But it actually considers the Sun as a part of the system. I understand this should be so because it is the best way we have to calculate Sun’s orbit “around” the Milky Way’s center, like Mooeypoo example about Earth-Venus-Sun in one of her wonderful teaching videos (I must see them all ).
Anyhow, the website acknowledges there is an error between the observed and the theoretical curves of speed of rotation. This is really nice because as an economist, I see a lot of these kin of discrepancies, meaning the theoretical model is not correct !! The website says (implicitly) the new model must consider a modification of the gravity law or the dark matter. But I guess there is another posibility…that we do not actually belong to the Milky Way Galaxy, but to another one being “engulfed” by it.
All the best… we are boy scouts, actually “from Mars”!!!

We are born with brains, and it is time we start using them. This project is meant to prove that science can be fun, interesting and engaging, and that you don't have to be a nerd to enjoy understanding the world around you.
